{"id":8600,"date":"2024-06-30T16:42:51","date_gmt":"2024-06-30T16:42:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artoday.net\/?p=8600"},"modified":"2024-06-30T16:42:51","modified_gmt":"2024-06-30T16:42:51","slug":"ron-desantis-says-sexual-fringe-festival-led-to-museum-funding-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artoday.net\/?p=8600","title":{"rendered":"Ron DeSantis says &#8216;sexual&#8217; Fringe festival led to museum funding cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n<p>\tFlorida Governor Ron DeSantis made clear to the public last week his decision to veto $32 million in arts and culture funding in next year&#8217;s state budget. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n<p>\tAccording to the publication <em>Tampa Bay Times<\/em>DeSantis said the cause was the Orlando International Fringe Theater Festival, which he said had obvious &#8220;sexual overtones&#8221; and was therefore inappropriate for state funding. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n<p>\tWhile it&#8217;s unclear if the Orlando Film Festival will receive funding from these grants, the state of Florida provides funding for cultural projects based on the following criteria: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fineout\/status\/1806351254362177954\" target=\"_blank\">Ranking List<\/a>The Fringe Festival ranked last. Halstead said the festival is one of 200 such events around the world that aim to &#8220;promote artistic expression and cultural exchange around the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n<p>\tRep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando, said this year\u2019s festival was not \u201cpornographic,\u201d but she noted, \u201cIt does feature drag queens and other forms of artistic expression, which DeSantis keeps trying to censor even though the courts are telling him not to!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n<p>\tIn 2023, lawmakers called for a ban on drag shows that allow children to attend and for venues to prohibit children from attending live adult performances.
