Hosted by Feral File, an online digital art platform founded in 2020, the series is titled \u201cCrystallized Works.\u201d<em> <\/em>Dozens of collectible digital works will be available every day over the next 12 months. It will be available on June 18th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n<p>\t&#8220;This work is first and foremost an experiment,&#8221; Gerard told <em>Art News<\/em>\u201cIn a virtual world on an Arctic floating bridge, a robot\u2014which I call the Prism Robot because its surface changes color every millisecond\u2014is creating 24 works every day from the 2024 summer solstice to the 2025 summer solstice. The artworks are derived from a JavaScript ice-generating algorithm I found online 20 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-related-links \/\/ a-pull-3@tablet lrv-u-text-align-center@tablet u-width-250@tablet lrv-u-padding-lr-050 lrv-a-floated-left@tablet lrv-u-margin-r-1 lrv-u-margin-b-1\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-font-family-secondary lrv-u-font-weight-bold lrv-u-font-size-26@tablet a-pull-up-above-item\">\n<p>\t\trelated articles<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<div class=\"u-border-color-brand-primary u-border-a-10@tablet u-padding-lr-1@tablet u-padding-b-1@tablet\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  a-pull-up-item a-hidden@mobile-max u-box-shadow-medium lrv-u-margin-b-050\">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-2x3\" style=\"\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/JdJ-Portrait-II.jpeg?w=150&amp;h=150&amp;crop=1\" alt=\"A smiling woman dressed in all black with her hands in her pockets.\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/JdJ-Portrait-II.jpeg 960w, https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/JdJ-Portrait-II.jpeg?resize=400,270 400w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(min-width: 87.5rem) 1000px, (min-width: 78.75rem) 681px, (min-width: 48rem) 450px, (max-width: 48rem) 250px\" height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n<p>\tGerard described the project as a \u201cglobal data performance.\u201d When asked what exactly that meant, he explained that it was \u201ca public work of art that anyone on the planet can access with a browser.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n<p>\tA link on the Feral File website leads to a video of digital robots diligently executing algorithms in real time to create \u201ccrystal rod lattices.\u201d Once completed, the lattices will be added to the Feral File gallery as \u201cunique, dynamic, tokenized 3D Web Graphics Library (WebGL) artwork,\u201d according to the platform\u2019s announcement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n<p>\tBy next year\u2019s summer solstice, 8,760 artworks will have been created, each of which will be tokenized on the Ethereum blockchain and sold for $100, or 0.026 ETH. \u201cCollectors can string these works together using the Feral File app to create longer performances,\u201d the platform noted in its announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Digital artists including Refik Anadol, Lu Yang, Rick Silva and 0xDEAFBEEF have all exhibited at Feral File, which is dedicated to providing \u201ca new type of collecting experience that connects otherwise disparate and previously unconnected artists, curators and collectors\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n<p>\t25% of the profits from \u201cThe Crystal Works\u201d will be donated to Hometree, a charity dedicated to restoring the 4,000 acres of rainforest lost in Connemara, Ireland.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n<p>\t\u201cJohn\u2019s commitment to supporting the natural world was hugely significant and will always be remembered,\u201d said Hometree CEO Matt Smith. <em>Art News<\/em>\u201cWe have been working together for three years and each time he has come up with new strategies that often go beyond my understanding of the digital art landscape. This time, as usual, his approach was ambitious, but he delivered. He is an amazing person with a unique mindset and I personally love his art. It is a pleasure to work with someone who has such a deep understanding of the climate crisis and biodiversity loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n<p>\tEvery day, the robot creates enough art to fund the planting of 33 trees in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n<p>\tEach piece is accompanied by a &#8220;Generative Soundtrack of the Year&#8221; created in partnership with Tone.js, a company that helps people create interactive music in their browsers. &#8220;The soundtrack was inspired by a sound bath, like a Tibetan sound bath. The sounds are higher in the summer and lower in the winter,&#8221; Gerard explains. Moreover, he says, &#8220;This is not a media piece\u2014it&#8217;s not about media. This is a data piece. There&#8217;s no recorded element, the sounds come from a choral piece derived from code.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n<p>\tEmbedded in each piece is a 4,000-pixel image file of the resulting crystal lattice, which Gerard calls a \u201cprototype\u201d that can be exported and printed on paper.
