{"id":8795,"date":"2024-07-02T20:30:43","date_gmt":"2024-07-02T20:30:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artoday.net\/?p=8795"},"modified":"2024-07-02T20:30:43","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T20:30:43","slug":"scorching-heat-leaves-lincolns-wax-figure-in-disarray","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artoday.net\/?p=8795","title":{"rendered":"Scorching heat leaves Lincoln&#8217;s wax figure in disarray"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>As part of the United States<strong> <\/strong>As a scorching heat wave gripped the United States over the weekend, sending temperatures to record levels, a six-foot-tall wax statue of Abraham Lincoln went viral for its demise, sparking humorous quips and memes on social media, some innocent, some outrageous.<\/p>\n<p>Titled \u201c40 Acres: Buck\u2019s Camp\u201d (2024), the wax sculpture consists of 10 candle wicks that visitors are encouraged to light and then extinguish after one to two minutes. The sculpture, commissioned and presented by the arts nonprofit CulturalDC, is one of a series of wax monuments Williams has been working on since 2017. It is also part of <em>40 ACRES Archives<\/em>Founded by the artist in 2021, it is an expanding collection of artworks, events, performances, films, and installations focused on African American history.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe location for 40 Acres: Buck\u2019s Camp was chosen because it sits atop a Civil War-era freedmen\u2019s community that Lincoln frequently passed through and visited while traveling between the White House and the White House. [his] Cabin,&#8221; Williams told <em>Allergic<\/em>He added that the work aims to &#8220;expand awareness of the history of self-liberated black communities during the Civil War and Reconstruction&#8221; and &#8220;as a way to understand and make sense of our contemporary condition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" class=\"perfmatters-lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic-newspack.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2024\/06\/v15044gf0000cpt3gf7og65qb0jmcsb0.mp4\"\/><noscript><video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic-newspack.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2024\/06\/v15044gf0000cpt3gf7og65qb0jmcsb0.mp4\"\/><\/noscript><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">While some users made light-hearted jokes about the statue&#8217;s transformation, others took a darker approach, alluding to the president&#8217;s infamous assassination attempt.
