India Art Fair cancels first Mumbai Art Fair

Organizers of the India Art Fair, held annually in New Delhi since 2008, have announced that the first Mumbai Art Fair, originally planned for 2025, has been cancelled. Dubbed the India Contemporary Art Fair, the event will be held from November 13 to 16 at the Jio World Garden in the Bandra Kurla complex in Mumbai, with around 60 Indian and international galleries participating.

“India Art Fair’s mission continues to be to prioritize the needs of galleries and artists in the region,” fair director Jaya Asokan said in a statement first published by India Art Fair. The Art Newspaper. “As part of this commitment, the expo scheduled to be held at Jio World Garden in November will no longer be held in the format as previously planned.”

India Art Fair is owned and operated by Angus Montgomery Arts, which organizes a series of regional fairs including Art Central Hong Kong, Taipei Contemporary Art Fair, Art SG Singapore and Tokyo Modern Art Fair.

The first Mumbai iteration was just announced in September. The news was treated with caution by regional gallerists, some of whom have already committed to participating in the concurrent third edition of the Mumbai Art Fair. The last edition of Bombay Art Fair, which ended in November, attracted 71 exhibitors, including many of India’s most prominent galleries, some of which regularly participate in Indian art fairs.

“We look forward to continuing to work with cultural institutions in Mumbai and across the country to nurture and support the emerging arts scene with a new year-round program of events and activities for 2025 to complement existing programming,” Asokan said in a statement.
