The Department of Art and Art History at SUNY Albany is accepting applications for the M.A. and M.A. in Studio Art programs. All students in the highly competitive two-year MFA program receive a teaching or graduate assistantship and a 50% tuition reduction.
Regular studio visits with faculty, peers, and visiting artists are designed to provide students with a range of contexts and perspectives in which to consider their work. The goal of the program is to broaden and deepen students’ understanding of contemporary art in order to better develop their studio focus. Contemporary art seminars complement studio courses and provide students with insights that enable them to operate with increasing criticality and self-awareness.
In this affordable interdisciplinary program, students can work in painting, printmaking, sculpture and installation, photography and related media, and have 24-hour access to spacious private and semi-private studios as well as fully equipped communal workspaces and production facility.
The department’s distinguished faculty of artists and art historians work closely with students to develop their graduate portfolios and prepare them for professional practice; as a culminating experience, MFA students exhibit their thesis work at the University Art Museum . Master’s students hold thesis exhibitions in art galleries and host public receptions.
The Visiting Artists and Lecturers Program brings internationally renowned artists to campus for public lectures and personal studio visits with graduate students.
The application deadline for the MFA and MFA in Studio Arts is February 15, 2025.
