Artist James Jean’s solo exhibition explores the complex dynamics between tradition and personal experience (previously shown here ). James is known for his collaborations with global entities such as Prada and BTS, and is also the creative force behind Oscar-winning film posters, e.g. Everything happens at the same time, The Shape of Waterr, and PinocchioCICA Vancouver will be exhibiting James’ new work for the first time in Canada. This is also his first North American exhibition in over a decade!
Born in Taipei, raised in New Jersey, and currently working in Tokyo and Los Angeles, James speaks to complex notions of cultural fluidity and belonging through dreamlike depictions of fictional characters. The title refers to a species of bird renowned for its ability to mimic the calls of other birds. However, their song is more than just a survival strategy; it is a profound expression of integration and harmony that resonates across diverse cultural histories. The exhibition delves into notions of cultural identity with an intentionally disorienting visual vocabulary that blends historical precedents—from Baroque paintings to Japanese woodblock prints and Chinese silk scroll paintings—with mythological and folk narratives in both Western and Asian contexts. The result is a culturally ambiguous picture that reflects the complex identities shaped by immigration and globalization. As CICA curator Viahsta Yuan says:
“Recognizing diasporic artists like James Jean is crucial to deepening our understanding of cultural diversity and identity, especially in a city like Vancouver, which has been profoundly shaped by its history of immigration since the 19th century. This exhibition not only showcases Jean’s extraordinary skills and unique style, but also celebrates the vibrant cultural context he weaves into his artistic practice… It serves as a mirror to the diverse experiences of members of our community. His journey inspires all of us to embrace our authentic voices and push the boundaries of artistic expression and path.”
CICA Vancouver will present “Meadowlark” from July 25 to September 15. Tickets for the opening ceremony can be purchased here (free RSVP tickets go on sale starting July 18).
