Jean-Michel Basquiat Portrait of a Wandering Young Artist (1982) sold for £16 million ($20 million) last night at Sotheby’s Modern and Contemporary Evening Sale in London. The sale totaled £84 million ($106 million), exceeding its pre-sale estimate of £69.6 million to £98.9 million ($88 million to $125.1 million). Pace Gallery, which currently represents Miami-based artist Alejandro Piñeiro Bello, will present the artist’s solo exhibition “Entre El Día Y La Noche” (“Between Day and Night”) in London from September 3 to 28. This will be the artist’s largest exhibition to date and his first major exhibition in the UK. Pace will represent the artist in partnership with KDR in Miami.Born in Havana in 1990, Pinheiro Bello studied painting at the National School of Fine Arts of San Alejandro from 2006 to 2010. Frieze has announced the exhibitor list for Frieze London 2024, which will feature 165 galleries from 43 countries, while Frieze Masters 2024 will feature 130 galleries from 26 countries. Both Frieze London and Frieze Masters will be slightly smaller than last year, with 166 and 136 galleries respectively participating in Frieze London 2023. The two London art fairs will take place simultaneously in Regent’s Park, London, from October 9 to 13. Finn O’Hara, a British-born photographer now based in Toronto, has taken a series of photographs documenting bird banding at Long Point Bird Observatory. Bird banding is a technique for studying and identifying birds. To track individual birds, scientists use mist nets to capture the birds and tie aluminum bands (with a unique set of numbers) to the legs after capture. For this series of photographs, O’Hara worked with Birdlife Canada. Illustrator Noopur Choksi creates a body of work that depicts the parallels between femininity and forms and patterns found in nature. Originally from India, Choksi currently resides in Baltimore. She studied Graphic Design at the National Academy of Design and recently received her MFA in Illustration Practice from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work seeks to externalize the often intangible emotional context of her work.
